MOSGIEL PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.
The Mosgiel Philharmonic Society held their second concert of the season in the Volunteer Hall, Mosgiel, on Friday evening. The concert was the best yet given by the society, and was £ ally appreciated by a large and representative audience, who expressed pleasure and surprise at the rapid strides made by the society, which is yet quite in its infanoy. The programme was a good one, and the items were all well rendered, able assistance being given to the orchestra by Herr Winklemann, and to the choir by Mr J. Robertson, of Dunedin. The former fairly enchanted the audience with a masterly rendering of a fantasia on Scotch and English airs and a farther item, for both of which he received a deserved encore. Mr Robertson being in capital, voice, had to respond to an encore for a vigorous rendering of " Queen of the Earth," and gave "The Sleeping Camp" equally well. During the evening Mr Chnrton, on behalf of the society, presented Mr Prentice (the conductor), who is giving up the conductorship, with an afternoon tea service. The society and musiclovers generally in Mosgiel regret that Mr Prentice has had to give up this position, and recognise that the present position and efficiency of the society is due, in a great measure, to his exertions.
