The Spy was quickest away, and jumped the first hurdle barely clear of Waterfall, with, Little Arthur and Don coming next and the others in close order. As they ran round the top turn, Little Arthur and Don joined The Spy, but tbe lastnaraed drew away again as they came down the straight, and passing the stand was a length in front of Little Arthur, with The Don, Waitangi, and Romulus following in that order. Going along the back of the course, The Spy and Little Arthur increased their advantage ; but before reaching the fcennelf, where The Don and Waitangi retired, Ixion and Romulus commenced to move up. Half a mile from home the race was left to the four leader?. Ixion was first beaten, and as be fell back, Little Arthur came on in front. The Spy' made his second effort inside the rails, and running very gamely, under punishment, won all . out by half -a - length from Little Arthufr. Romulus a couple of lengths away third, Ixion a poor fourth, Waterfall fifth, and Pizarro jlasfc. Time, 4min 3sec. Dividends, £11 11s and £13 oa6d. MAIDEN STAKE 1 . NEW ZEALAND CUP, Of lOOOsova. Freedom and Cracksbot were tbe first to break tbe line, and as they came on to the old corner the pair were well clear of Dudu, with Wolverine pulling double coming next, while Whisper and Jet d'Eau were at the bead of the second division, and Kotuku whipping in. There was no material change in these positions as they passed the stand and swept round the turn at Cutts', but racing towards Ford's Freedom and Crackshot Biio>iMy increased their advantage. Dudu was a good length in front of Wolverine, and Whisper with Kotuku and St. Andrew tailing off. Before reaching tbe six furlongs post the leaders took closer order, and at the kennels Freedom and Crackahot were evidently iv trouble, Wolverine at the same time taking command. As they came into the straight Wolverine was still at the head of affairs and going well, while Freedom and Crackahot were beiDg ridden to keep their positions, and Dudu was holding her own on the inside. Just above the distauce Freedom and Crackshot fell back hopelessly beaten. In the next dozen strides Jet d'Eau and Whisper followed suit, leaving Wolverine striding along in front of Dudu, with Occident and Whisper several lengths away. At the rails everything but the leader was under the whip, and roming along full of running, the big son of Le Loup | won very easily by two lengths from Dadu.with Strepbon, who had come very fast from the distance, another three lengths away, third, Occident fourth, Whisper fifth, Crackshot sixth, Freedom seventh, Jet d'rjJau eighth, Kotuku ninth, and St. Andrew last.
