WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this county counoil was held in the Council Chambers, Hawksbury. on Friday last, at whioh there were present the Chairman (Mr J Green), and Crs J. O. Buokland, J. W Bolt, J. Crickmore, J. Porteous, and J. D. Ritohie.

Thirty-six ratepayers of North-Bast Valley petitioned the council to take steps to put a stop to the practice of turning cattle on the county r<iads— 3o or 40 a night — thus damaging the roads and gardens in the neighbourhood.— The council reiolved to ask Inspector Moore to instruct the police to render all the assistance in their power to abate the nuisance.

Messrs Millar, Bell, and Mitchell, Waitati, petitioned'the oounoll in reference to the road from Upper Waitati, near Mrs Mitchell's reiidence, to Millar's and Bell's properties, which had been quite impassable all the winter.— The petitioners to be informed that the funds at the disposal of the council, and contributed thereto by the petitioners, would not admit of the request being complied with, but the inspector would be instructed to have the water tables attended to by the surfaceman. Fourteen residents and claimholders at Nenthorn and Macraes drew the council's attention to the road from Macraes and Nenthorn to Palmerston, via Lot's Wife, whioh required forming and culverts.— The Inspector to report on the necessity of the work, with estimated cost of same.

The Finance Committee reported the examination of accounts for the month, amounting to £285 10b 4d, which they recommended the council to past for payment.

The inspector, in his monthly report, stated that the roads, owing to the dry weather, were in good condition, and nothing had ocourred to call for special mention. ohe North-Bast Valley riding had received the usual attention from the surfaceman, and during the present month the clay roads to the right of the main road toward* Pine Hill would be

ready for contract. The roads in the Blueskin riding were very much improved, and the several contracts during the month had progressed and would soon be completed. The Merton riding had received considerable attention, all the metal had been spread, and an extra man engaged during the month to overtake the most pressing requirements of the riding. The general state of the roads in the Hawks bury riding were in very good order, the different contracts were progressing, and the usual attention had been paid to repairs.— The report was adopted. Road to Nenthorn. — This road from coal pit to Nenthorn road could be improved to enable coal to be carted from the pit by cuttings where necessary and leaving several places unformed at a cost of £80, but the work originally proposed could not be carried out for the amount limited by the council.— The oounoll resolvtd to call for tenders f r the most necessary work. Warrington-Seacliff road. — This road, from the main road beyond Gardiner's to the railway orossing, was not metalled except about eight chains, and many placeß were steep, soft, and curved. The cost of putting a mile in thorough repair, 20ft wide, with a crown of 9in, and metalled or gravelled 10ft wide was estimated to co»t £205. Resolved — ' That about five chains of thn worst portions of the road near Gardiner's be first made up with scrub out from the higher side, and to be covered with clay as soon as the weather permits."

Paterson's Road.— This road, which consisted of clay, was very flat and hollow, with several steep pinches, and required roundinjj and gravelling, and 100 yds of excavation to be used in r >i«ing the centre. Estimated cost, £13 The cost of rounding and gravelling 38 chains of the road to Bethune's gate would be ab ut. £17. CORRESPONDENCE.

The District Survey Office, Pu-PtHn. wrote calling attention to the fact flint thp Government had granted the council £50 as a subsidy of £1 for£l towaids the repairs and improvements of the WaikiriWaitati road, plans aod specifications for which had to be sent to Chief Surveyor for approval. Bowling, Merton, wanted to know if anything could be done to a culvert across the Main road in front of his property, which was too high to drain the swamp, and in consequence of the water being backed up he had lost his best cow and several other cattle. — Referred to the inspeotor for a report.

Mr A. S. Wilson, Bvansdale, aiked the council to inspect the road leading from the Main road to the pound, there being a steep pinch and those using the road had to go through private property. Referred to the inspector to report at next meeting.

Mr George Ord, Merton, wrote drawing the attention of the council to the state c f the road to the bush in section 7, block 111. The embankments were too narrow, and the creek required a culvert. — The inspector was instructed to report at next meeting. Mr W. Maxwell. Hawkebury, drew attention to that part of the last contract on the Quarry road leading ti hie pmperfcy, the entrance to his gate being left, in nn unsafe star* for the want of a culvert. O Jenkins, Hurkes, applied for information as to what the council would allow him for acting a« ranger at Sawyer's Bay, a number of ratepayers being desirous ttiathe should undertake t.he diitie".— The olerk was instructed to Inform Mr Jenkins that the council did not at present intend making such an appointment.

A letter <- as received from Mr H. Tompkim, Dunedin. wanting to know if the council had done anything with respect to getting him a legal road to h's property, and if not the reason why ?

Mesnrs Kenyon and Hoßking, golloitors, Dunedin, wrote re the uropose't exchange of a pipce of road line between Mr H. Buckland and the council, enclosing plan and asking the council to proceed with the necessary steps to cose the old | ieee of road. A tramfer of the new piece of road line had been sent to Mr H. Bucklnnd for hie signature, and would be forwarded to the council.— The clerk was instructed to write to Mmrs Kenyon and Ho.'king informing them that a tender had been accepted for the forming of the road, and the council would transfer the old road in terms of the arrangement entered itito with Mr Buckland.
