THE GOLD DREDGING INDUSTRY.
The Upper Waipori and Jutland Flat Gold Mining Companies, encouraged by the success that has atre.ickd the dredging operations of the former compan} ab Waipori, have called for teuders for two timber dredge punts to be constructed on their respective claims. The contracts include the timber-vrork only, the machinery, &c, being a matter for other contracts. The dredges are to be 81ft 6in long by 20ft beam, designed for dredging 10ft deep, and will be constructed with longitudinal trusses running right fore andaf t, thus taking the work ing strain on the line of their greatest strength. These trusses will be well 'braced transvenly, aid the sides of the dredge and deck covered with 2|in planking, and well caulked. Only heart wood is to be used in each of the contracts, and as the design is simple and easy of construction, it is expected that a considerable saving will be made in the cost of the hull, as compared with one of iron or steel. The companies' engineer (Mr H. Hay) expects the dredges to bo ready for their machinery In three or for mouths, and to be at work shortly afterwards. The Jutland Flat Company's share li«t only closed a few days since, and the works are already practically in hand. Judging from the 'favourable local reports concernißg the claim of this ■company, the energetic measures adopted by them •hid lair to achieve the success they merit.
