The running was made by Ponza from Sebastian and Messilina to the foot of the hill, where the last-named pair dropped away, and their places were taken by Fontainebleau and Janissary, who challenged Ponza in the last hundred yards. From that point there was a close finish, and with Fontainebleau hanging fire on the post, he sustained a neok defeat by Ponza,
