Junk 7.— The new hall had a most successful opening. About 50 couples were present and kept the fun going till daylight. This hall will supply a long felt want, as the old building was far too small for the number of people that attend public entertainments. The Bkating rink hae opened for the winter, and I believe the proprietor is fully satisfied ■with the amount of patronage he is receiving. A quadrille assembly also meets once a week, so that the'people of the township should be satisfied with the'entertainments at their disposal. Licensing.— Yesterday the Licensing Committee granted renewals of licenses to Mr R. A. Elliott, of the Fortroae Hotel, and Mr G. Dodds, Waikawa (accommodation). Mr J. Beaton was granted a license for the Commercial Hotel, the license for which was formerly held by Mr B. Afcfcwood. The committee grantedalloense(provislQnßlly on a new house being erected within three months) to Mr Newson for the Fine Bush Hotel. Football. — The young men of the district are attempting to form a football club, but difficulty is experienced in getting a suitable piece of ground to play on. Mining.— Dredging is still " all the go " here. The latest applications are for the Waikawa beach. The next claim in which active operations will be commenced is that of the Lake Brunton Company, and after that tbe Six Mile, one of the beet claims (orsupposedtobe) onthe beaoh. We have had a splendid season so far. there having been only two or three very slight frosts. j
