ENTERTAINMENTS.

The second of Messrs Barth and Schacht's series of chamber concerts, which for the future are to be he.ld on Thursday evenings, was given on the 6th in the Ohoral Hall to a very numerous audience, who were treated to an excellent and well interpreted programme of music The opening selection was a quartott for two violins, viola, arid 'cello, performed by Mr Schacht, MUb B. Joel. Messrs Barrett and Winckelmanu. This was Beethoven's op. 18 (No. 5), comprising four movements, and the really admirable manner In which the item, was rendered, with the beauty of the composition itself, made it the gem of the evening. The next instrumental selection was n pianoforte 6010 by Mr Barth, whose invrtrlably brilliant execution found full dcope in his selection of a polonaise in B flat major by Chopin. Mr Barth whs warmly applauded for his performance, and had to bow his acknowledgments to the audience. Mr Schacht followed with a violin solo— a sonata, " Lo trille dv Diabla" (Tartini)— giving a skilful and expressive rendering of a difficult composition. The concluding item was a trio for piano, violin, and 'cello in D minor, op. 49 (Mendelssohn), played by Messrs Barth, Schacht, and Winckelmann. This, like the preceding pieces, was characterised by instrumentation of a very high order, and was greatly appreciated. The vocalist of the evening was Mr Densera, who contributed two fresh songs, in both of which he wasjoompletely succeßßful. The first of these was " The two grenadiers " ( Schumann), and the other was " The thorn " (Shield), the latter being perhaps the better effort, although, as above mentioned, the rendering of neither left room for fault-finding. The Highcllff Mutual Improvement Society held a very successful mußical entertainment on Wednesday evening, Messrs Fsirbairn.Laridreth, and Inglis being the chief p rformers Mr Robertson contributed a vory interesting essay on phrenology. Miss Duckworth added much to the enjoyment by presiding at the organ.
