Brown old Plutarch in No. 2 is next visited, and we find him so contented, and feeding so quietly and looking so well that surely no shadow of a loDgiug after his native land and the scenes of his triumphs ever crosses his mind or gives him a care. Boase says the old horse never was better in his life, and it is enough to say he looks quite up to the commendation. He is rather stout just now, but then his work has been light and his living easy, and he ought to be weli. He has had two mishaps since reaching these shores, which may cause him some trouble and inconvenience. Firstly he broke a small blood vessel in the head, but he was in work again within a week after ; and latterly — a fortnight ago — while striding, be ricked himself filightly in the rump, but a short respite saw him not much apparently the worse, and agsin ou the track. He has to run in two weight-for-age races before he is eligible to compete in handicaps ; and as the racing season is now close at hand we shall soon see, unless his mishaps tell against him, the old fellow showing the Britons the mettle of his pastures. After satisfying ourselves about the health and condition of the Australians, we followed Mr Briggs over the extensive establishment under his supervision, and found he had 30 horses in hand in various stages of preparation in the main stables, and 33 yearlings housed in pairs in separate quarters at the rear ; but time dots not permit me to make any special remarks
