Mr Gladstone, in presenting a Cobden Club address to Mr Thomas Potter, admitted that Freetrade was undergoing a period of danger, and that its doctrines had lost much ground during the past quarter of a century owing to a large extent to European militarism. The American and colonial action in excluding the Chinese was Protection pure and simple. It was the virtues and not the vices of the Chinese that were dreaded. He believed that Freetrade would triumph shortly in America. Thirteen thousand quarters of New Zealand wheat have been sold at 34s 6d. English is Is and foreign 6d dearer.
May 13. Mr Cecil Raikes, Postmaster-general, states that the present loss on the outward postal service to Australia is £78,000, and that a reduction of a penny to India and Australia would mean an additional loss of £130,000. Berlin, May 13. In the Reichstag General Yon Caprivi said he reviewed the colonial policy with misgivings, but retreat now was impossible. Bullets and bibles, he said, must civilise Africa.
