LAKE COUNTY.
May 12. — We are having excellent weather, far too fine tor onr requirements, in fact. Snow and rain, and plenty of it, would suit the majority of residents much better. Italian climes and cloudless skies become very monotonous after you have had about 18 months of them without a break worth speaking of. However, the young wheat is coming on fine, and grassed snowing unmistakeable signs of growth. Funeral.— On Tuesday last the remains of the lace Mr B. Elliott, of Mace town, were consigned to the grava in the Arrow cemetery, when the large cortege whioh followed the hearse gave evidence of the high esteem in whioh the deceased was held, and of the sympathy that is felt for the bereaved family. Rev. I. P. Burrows, Wesleyan minister, conducted the obsequies in a very impressive manner. Improving the Mind.— Rev. D. Hoes has set on foot a movement for a debating club at Queenstown. It is rather remarkable that the great number of the young people who are growing up in Otago upcountry townships under an educational system far above the ordinary average should be so indifferent to the cultivation of their minds, as is generally found to be the case. The public libraries, of whioh most of the towns can boast, are very poorly supported, and of the number of books read the novels, compared with those conveying solid information, are out of all proportion with the designs for whioh these libraries were formed.
Kickeb, Oh!— Football teams have been formed at Queenstown and Arrowtown, and a match to be played at the latter place has been arranged for the 24th of this month.
The Weather appears to be unsettled, and there is that penetrating chill pervading the atmosphere which generally precedes a snowstorm.
