THE NEW PLYMOUTH MURDER.
New Plymouth, May 13. The inquest concerning the murder at the Recreation ground was continued to-day.
Sergeant Duffin flatly contradicted the evidence of the witness Maher, who gave evidence iv favour of the prisoner to the effect that he saw the deceased alive between 1 and 2 p.m. on the 11th April. (The theory of the prosecution is that Mahoney was murdered between 11 aud 12 a.m. The prisoner's counsel, it is expected, will set up an alibi, relying upon the evidence that Mahoney was seen alive at 2 p.m.)
Under cross-examination Sergeant Duffin 6tnted that he did not search Mahoney's house the day that the body was found, nor did he do so for two days afterwards. A man named Carnell had charge of the housa on behalf of the police.
Darby Claffey, re-called, stated that he made an inventory of the articles in the deceased's house, and gave it to Sergeant Duffin on the Saturday — the day the body was found. Harriot Ward, dressmaker, deposed i'hat on f 'he 11th April nhe saw the deceased alive at 1 p.m. in Carrie street. She saw him as she was retui-niug from her dinner to her shop. She had not seen him for nine months previously, but was quite sure, she wab not mistaken. The inquest was renewed at 7.30 p.m., when Mips Ward was re-examined. The inquest it. still procediug.
