HOW TO KNOW GRASSES BY THE LEAVES.

(By A. N. M'Alpine, B.Sc, &c.)

The object of thiß excellent Jittle book is to enable farmers and all interested in agricultural work to identify at any season of tho year the various grasses forming any pasture. There are already plenty of works for the botanist giving the minute characters of flowers and seeds of all our common grasses, but these characters are such as are not readily appreciated by unlearned folk, so this attempt to place in the hands of all a means of distinguishing one grass from another by readily-Been characteristics such as colour, size, and venation of leaves will be heartily welcomed. The author proves himself thoroughly competent for hiß task, and not only by clear descriptions, but by plates, has brought it within the power of any one to determine in his fields at any time of the year the grasses constituting the pasture. Considering the different values of grasses as fodder the importance of this is at once apparent, and many who have been deterred from this study by the formidable scientific tomis of most text books may ba led to observe inora cluarly the nature of tho grasses in his fiolds, and many important observations may thu'i bo made by those whoso daily work places them in a position to note what, grasses aro preferred by stock, and also on what soils and under what circumstance 1 ! tha diffarent species of 2fra.')a are mo&t luxuriant.

We can heartily recommend this little book to all practically engaged iv agriculture. Ifc would be worth while to introduce _it as a Rcienoe primor in the schools in agticuifcural districts.
