If 1 P to K4,Pto X 4; 2P to Q B 4, there are already two holes in White's camp—namely, at Q 3 andQ4. They will remain all the more dangerous as long as the adverse Q P rem&ins at Q 3, for that P stops the advance of the two hostile ones. The Xt is only very slightly stronger than three pawns. The Kts are well adapted for entering into a "hole" or weak square of the adverse game, especially when supported by pawns on either side. When either Xt can reach X 1) 5 without being liable to bo driven awaj r or exchanged, he will occupy a very menacing position against the adverse king's side. The Q Xt is often manoeuvred from Q B 3 via X 2 fco X Xt 3 for the attack; and also via Q2to X B. and thence to X Xt 3 or X 3 with good effect. After castling K'a side, it fs generally a good plan to remove the X Xt in order to advance P toX B 4, and generally Xt to X ia the beßt votreat for that purpose. But wo disapprove on general prinoiplea playing P to X R 3 in order to retreat Xt to R 2. — Steinitz.
