Melboubnb, April 30. A man named Lee, who has been on a heavy drinking bout, ran amnck in the city last night, and attempted to murder several persons. He was captured after a severe struggle, but not before he had inflicted seven stabs on himself, from which he died. Sydney, April 30. At a meeting of the Colonial Sugar Company to-day, it was stated that the question of the stoppage of black labour in Queensland had been carefully considered, with the result that it was found that the sugar industry could not be carried on in the tropics without Kanaka labour. The company bad arranged for sites in suitable districts in Fiji with a view of removing the Queensland mills there. • Brisbane, April 30. A goods train was completely wrecked near Barcaldine by running into a wash-away. No casualties are reported. Adelaide, April 30. There is considerable excitement on the Stock Exchange owing to the failure of two leading stock brokers, one of whom oyer sold and was unable to deliver. A company has been formed to purchase the assets of the Commercial Bank of Australia. £120,000 will be distributed to shareholders on the lottery principle. There was a tremendous rush for shares, and the whole were allotted in a few hours. The Government has instructed the police to suppress the lottery company, which includes many leading citizens. The final harvest returns give the average yield at seven bushels of 551b to the acre. Several clerks engaged in the company formed for taking over the assets of the Commercial Bank have been arrested for issuing receipts to allotment forms.
