The laud return for the year ending 31st March has just been completed. It shows a total of 4,130,966 acres taken up to 2325 acres selected, as against 2,273,183 acres tnken up, and 282,716 acres selocted for the previous year. The return is made up as follows : — Land taken up for cash, 51,743 acres ; deferred payment, 41,235 ; perpetual lease, 238,583 ; small areas, 50; agricultural lea-se, 53; village settlement on deferred payment, 810; village homestead special settlement, 270; speciul settlement, 4873 ; pastoral lenie, 3,731,258 ; small grazing rune, 60,340; homestead, 1751. Tha number of persons are as follows : — Land selected for cash, 787 ; dnforred payment:, 304 ; perpetual lease, 830 ; small areas, 2; agricultural leafe, I ; villa c settlenaeut, 1 ; deferred payment, 75 ; villago settlements, 2o; special sebtlemeuts, 45; pastoral lease, 207 ; small grazing runs, 35 ; homestead, 19.
