CLUTHA. COUNTY COUNCIL.

The above council met at Balclntha on Friday afternoon. There were present— Mr M'Lachlan (chairman), and Crs Hunter, Chiistie, Bradfield, Hay, Robertson, Scott, and Dallas. CORRESPONDENCE. The clerk of the Tuapeka County Council intimated that that council was willing to assist in the erection of the Pomahaka bridge to the extent of £100.— Received. A. Clulee, secretary to the Ofcago Benevolent Institution, wrote making inquiries with reference to the circumstances of a number of persons in receipt of relief wituin the county.— These cases were considered ; the clerk to communicate the recommeudations arrived at. The secretary to the United Districts of Central Otago, Tuapeka, and Otago Charitable Aid Board forwarded a statement of the amount payable by the council to the board for the year euding March 31, 1891, £383 13s 8d ; also statement of amount payable to the Ofcago District Hospital Hoard, £217 10s 2d ;— total, £601 3s 10d.-^he council agreed to pay the same by quarterly instalments. Messrs Adams Brothers applied on behalf of Mr A. Oaaeels for a license to slaughter large and small cattle on his property, section 11, block VII, South Molyneux district. — License to be issued on usual conditions. A circular from the Mayor of Akaroa, forwarding subscription list and soliciting subscriptions towards the erection of an obelisk in commemoration of the jubilee of the proclamation of Kngliah sovereignty at Akaroa, was read and received. ROADS AND WOEKS. In his monthly report the Kngineer explained the position of the various contracts. He had inspected the Pomahaka river where it is washing away a portion of block X, Kelse township. He found the river had cut through Denholm street, and at one place was within 25 yards of the back line of the block. The most efficient way to protect the bank would be to face it with rubble stone the height of the gravel in the bottom, giving the top a slope of 2to 1. A length of 12 chains required to be done, and he estimated the cost at £10 per ohain. The new road, Tapanui to Gore, had been made passable for light traffic. The grader had been used in making the sidling cuttings, and gave entire satisfaction. He had inspected the Wairuna creek at Mr Murray's place, and explained that a number of years ago the Clinton Road Board, In order to do away with two bridges, cut a new channel for the creek along the side of the road. A portion of this channel is widening and endangering Mr Murray's fence. The new ohannel was cuts with Mr Murray's approval, and it waß a considerable improvement to his property. He also reported that the bridge over the Wairuna creek, on the Wairuna Main road, is in a dangerous state, and will require to be renewed as soon as possible. The report was adopted, and, on the motion of Cr Scott, it was agreed to take no action as to the proteotiou asked by Mr Murray, Wairuna ; also, on the motion of Or Eobkbtson, that no action be taken regarding the protection works asked for at Kelso. On the motion of Cr Scott, seconded by Cr Daxlas, it was agreed to obtain a legal opinion as to the responsibility of the council in regard to bridges reported as unsafe and upon which the council has caused notices to be posted intimating their unsafe condition. Or Bradfiki,d moved that the bridge over the Kaihiku stream on the road from Kaihiku to Hogg'fl bridge be replanked. Seconded by Cr Hay and carried. MISCELLANEOUS. The pay-sheet, amounting to £106 Us 6d, was passed for payment; also members' expenses for half-year, £46 Bs. Tenders for contract No. 421 (maintenance metal for Main South road) were opened, and that of W. Wilkinson was accepted at 6s 5d per ynrd— £s4 3s 4d. On the motion of Cr Christie, it was directed that all rates unpaid on May 10 be sued for.
