A gpeoial from Rome on March 27 flays :— A number of cardinal!) are advocating the idea that the successor of Leo XIII should leave Italy immediately after election. They declare that the position of the Pope in Italy is untenable at present. The Pope strongly opposes the scheme, and has appealed to the cardinals that his last day a on earth be comforted by the assurance that the absentee idea be abandoned. The Tribune's Vienna correspondent gaya negotiations have been in progress for several months between the Emperor of Austria and the Vatican which may lead to the cession of a troublesome province in Trent to the Holy Father aB a residence. The offer has already been made.
