OUR AUCKLAND SPORTING LETTER.

Auckland, August 20. The well-known peneiller, Mr Jacob Enko, left to-day for Sydney, at which place he intends taking up his permanent residence. Previous to his departure Mr Enko was entertained at a champagne supper, at which about 50 persons were present, and speeches of a most complimentary nature on the manner in which the guest of the evening had at all times discharged his liabilities were delivered by various speakers. Mr Enko was the recipient of many presents, among which was a chaste gold pencil case from the press representatives. •Mr Enko took the Musket— Lady Kivensworth cnlt Puechka and the ponies Signess and Nap across with him. | Lady Norah has not been a regular attendant at the racecourse during the past few days, owing to her having met with a:i accident while galloping. Ifc apoears from what I can. learn that she was Ix'ing indulged in a mild canter in the middle of the course, when by some means she struck one of her tendons badly. Of course, the injury being taken in time, there ia just a cbanceof her not being altogether knonked out ; but so far as the New Zealand Cup is concerned she may, in my opinion, be reckoned amongst the dead division. Her Btable companion Quadrant (by Robinson Crusoe Ita<liauce) is goin.; on most satisfactorily, an<i if he goes on impioving .as he should do. will, I am cot tain, be a very trrmrfc customer. Quadrant was purchased at the Sylvia Patk sale in 1888 by Mr Dan O'Brit-n for 280gs. Mr Bobb&tt having taken a great liking to the eolfc, offered 3Oogs for him, which was accepted. He has only started once, when ha got second to Corumia forthe Nursery Handicap at the A R.C. Sunmer meeting. Tetford having Rhown signs of going amiss, has been sent np to Paeroa to; do stud duty. The only foaling of noto as yet;-at Sylvia Park is Steppe (dam of Bussley), who has produced.

a colt to Nordenfeldfc ; and the half sister to Hermit will again be mated with him this season. Sylvia Xd&m. of Martini-Henry J is this season to go to Ingomar. Nomenclature.— Bay filly (3yre) by Musket — ( Rosalie, Cartridge; bay colt (2yrs) by King Cole — Eileen Alannah, Master Pat ; browa filly (2yrs) by King Cole —Melody, Queen Alic e; brown colt (2yra) by Torpedo— Yatterina, 'Pin/ire ; brown filly (2yrs) •by Somuus— Fanny Fisher, Lady Emmeline, AQUATIC. Mr O. Battley, shipbuilder, is making good ■progress with the construction of Mr D. H. Haineß* new eight-ton yacht, and expects to have her ready for launching by the end of next month, in ample time for the yachting se«on. She is to be beautifully fitted up with panntlling of New Zealand woods. FOOTBALL. On Saturday the Probables and Possibles for the match Auckland v. Natives held a trial match. The ground waß a trifle greasy, but a fairly good game was played, in which the Possibles— though the ultimate score was against them— had somewhat of an advantage. The \ scores were— Probables, 9; Possibles, 5. Masefleld, Brauad, Hobson, and Murray secured tries for the former, one being converted, while Maeefield potted a goal and Bianey touched down twice. The general opinion expressed on Saturday night when the selection became known was that the fifteen was a good representative team of the cJfcy&gjut the exclusion of O 'Brian at three-quarter was everywhere dubbed a mistake. The Southern team was selected to-night, and is considered as strong as it could be made with the men who were available for the trip. The action of the committee in including the Maori members is endorsed, ffine forward is yet to be chosen. The Maoris are favourites for Saturday's match, but it is expected that Auckland will make a strong fight.
