(Peh Peess Association.) Melbourne, August 21. Costello has been sentenced to death for the murder of a woman named Annie Thornlon at the beginning of July. Sydney, August 21. The Daily Telegraph, commenting on the Chemis case, regrets that Sir Harry Atkinson's suggestion for the appointment of si committee to inquire into the procedure after txials of such characters, was not carried out, and suggests that the Parliament of New South Wales might follow the matter up. A bill will be introduced, authorising the issue of £2,600,000 worth of Treasury bills to cover the deficit. Adelaide, August 21. The Financial Statement says the prospects of the colony are exceedingly bright. The surplus at the end of the year is esti* mated at £Bo\ooo. A new loan will be floated. Perth, August 21. Lord Knutsford has decided that the charges against Chief Justice Onslow have not been proved, but to avoid friction in future Judge Onslow will be appointed elsewhere.
