o (Per Hauroto at Auckland). London. A party of Mahommedans having shot an Italian soldier dead outside Candia, the Italian Government have ordered a warship to proceed to demand satisfaction. The Christian majority of the Cretan Assembly are arming against the Mahommedans, who are leading the revolt. Greece has sent a formal note threatening to interfere unless order is restored, and the Greek fleet is ordered to be in readiness to proceed to Crete. The English Government, replying to the note, discourages any action being taken. Turkey declines to agree to mediation, and Niamil Pasha (Grand Vizier) has made a demand to Greece for an explanation of the note to the Powers. Athens, August 19. The condition of affairs at Crete is reported to he more favourable. August 20. Chaker Pasha, the new Governor of Crete, has proclaimed martial law.
