Notes from Mahakipawa.

(Khom Our Own Correspondent.) ,1,. „ August 16. Hie weekly average of gold returns from Cullensville was wolt sustaiued la .t week. The Waiwapa p\rty 'washed out nearly 48pz; Hunt and Watson, 14oz ; a'-.d Newman's party made a rattling -week's work -altogether there was over 2i)ooz obtaire-t. Quite a new lead }iaa been struck on a higher level in White Pine Guliy. A party of three found a good prospect, and after three days' work gofc 6£oz. This find soon became known after the men bad imbibed some refreshments at the township, and quite a livelr li tie rush sot in, a number from Cullen's creek travelling by candle light, and ivfore morning over

a mile and a half in length was pegged off. The gold is of similar character to that found ia Davis and Carr's terrace claim, about 300 ft above the level of present run of water in Cullen's creek. In the Maori creek, a tributary of Cullen's, a few parties are at last getting good payable gold, but these mountain gorges, we might almost call them, are so deep that in most cases the miner must sink 30ft to 50ft before bottoming, and there being such heavy drainage, thorough prospecting takes a long time. A few parties are now doing well up the lefthand branch of the Walkakaho, whioh extends between four and five miles in length from the junction, and as it is located right in the line between Cullen's creek, the Wakamarina forks, and Onamalutu. No doubt the coming summer will tell " a good tale." Our great drawback is want of tracks to encourage prospecting in such rough country, and I suppose Government are not so much to blame when our member never opens bis mouth to point out the necessity for doing such work.
