It appears "that the railways carried 3,182,803 passengers, of 319,047 . fewer than in'the previous year. Parcels, ;«c,, , numbered 399,706, , 0r almopt exactly the same as i^ the previouaiyear,(S99,72a). Dl,939livastook(, were conveyed,' * being (• 29,882 fewer than in' the year' before. 1 ' There was also a" decrease' of 5944 tqns in, the wool carried (78^02 f tonj), but in grain, and, minerals, there,, were,; large increases of 89,995 and 86,549 tons 1 respectively, aacl there were also increases in merchandise, timber, firewood, and chaff; &o. The total goods traffic for the year amounted to 1,920,431. tons, or .164,669, tons in excess' of last year's figures. There were increases in all branches of railway revenue expepting passengers, parcels, and luggage. The! total cost of. the railways open to the 21st March was £13,352,978... The net profits for the year are therefore at the rate of very nearly 2| per cent, on the cost on the opened lines^ _
