Reefton Mining Notes.

(Fboh Oue Own Cobbespondbnt.) Reefton, May 10. Keep-ii-Dark.—There has been some activity in these shares to-day, and holders are now asking 395. It is understood the cause of the rise is the probability of the property being sold in IJondon on the old terms.' X cannot hear, however, that Mr Argoll, ME:, has'expressed the slightest opinion either on the mine, or the 1 chances of the sale being effected. May 12. The following are the battery returns for the past week:—Globe, 2740z amalgam from 190 tons; Keep-it-Dark,3looz of amalgam from 168 tons; Sir Francis Drake, 490z amajgam for the week; Inkerman, 104oz amalgam from 100 tons (top plates). Sir Francis Drake. —The mine manager report. He writes: —" The quantity of amalgam obtained for three days' crushing was 490z. I have not satisfied myself yet as to the best gratings for saving minerals, and require a few more trials."

Nil Desperandum.— The mmc manager reports :— " We sfcrdck a very nice looking reef in the south drive coming in from the hanging wall side aud running in 20in. ( The borings prospeoted will bring over loz per ton. I have finished cutting the chamber, and have started driving on the reef north." May 13. Scotia. — There has been considerable speculation in these shares- to-day, owing to the discovery daring Saturday night of exceptionally rich stone on the level. One broker, who seems to have got a timely tip, completely swept the local market, baying the shares up at 4s 6d. This evening the quotation is 6s 3d, so that he has made a good stroke. May 14. Scotia. — These shares after reaching 7s last night have since been stationary, or, perhaps, on the turn. There is no freah news from the mine to-day. United Alpines have suffered a fall of from Is 6d to 2s, but there is very little doing in them. The day altogether has been remarkably quiet, and the brokers are' complaining of lack of busi< ness.
