Apbhi 23.— Mr M. J. S. Maokenzie. M.H.E. for the district, paid us a visit yesterday, at the invitatlon of the Progress Committee, fo» ,tbe purpose of discussing a number of local matters. Durlngliis visit Mr Mackenzie inspected the new roller machinery being erected at the company's Bmine, at a cost, of JJ3OQQ, and .expressed his admiration of the energy; ■ displayed by the proprietors. Pupuo Mjbbwkg.— A public meeting was held }n; the evening. The attendance was unfortunately! (polled by. a heavy downpour of rain. Mr J. Thomson was voted- to the chair, and introduced 1 M# Mackenzie to the.meeting. Among the matters discussed were the 0091 question and, the new.road leading from the, - settlement to the Hindon railway. . The, former has fortunately J>een, satisfactorily settled, wmle Mr Mackenzie premised to do what he could to get the new- roM #niahed, remarking that he was surprised that the road had, been left incomplete .when the expenditure,.'of a very small, sum would have finished It, Jle further promised to assist in passing the Fair Bent Bill, but warned them, that the bill was intended, for persons who were really rack-rented and who could prove their casein a court, to be established for the purpose, and not to be taken advantage of by persons who simply wanted a reduction. The necessity of having the Otago Central line opened to Uindon was then discussed, and Mr Mackenzie promised his assistance in the matter. , The no'liability clause of the Companies, Aot was discussed ,at somelength, Mrßegg explaining theolause, and qhowing that oo.ntra.ry fro. the general belief the workmen's interests were, protected. It was decided, to object to the dosing of, a road line near Mr Singer's property, and this being all the business before the meeting, a hearty vote of thanks was' passed to Mr Maokenzie, and the meeting adjourned, , '
