THE DISASTER AT TAHITI.

Auckland, April 3.

During the recent floods at Tahiti several heavy landslips occurred in the Lilly districts. It is feared that great loss of life will be recorded when fuller information comes to hand. The village swept into the sea is that of Papetoi, houses being carried bodily away on the stormy water of the ocean along with the inhabitants— men, women, and children — in one helpless mass. At Mooria the flood caused great loss, the place having been overwhelmed by a terrible avalanche which descended from the hills. It is estimated the loss sustained by the unfortunate inhabitants of Papetoi alone exceeds 30,000fr, and a special appeal is made for contributions on their behalf. The mail schooner, City of Papeete, had a narrow escape during the hurricane. She arrived from San Francisco just as the stoim was rising, and was forced to proceed to sea and remain out for eight days until the gale abated.
