THE LONDON WOOL SALES.
(Per Press Association.) London, April 2. At the wool auction to-day 7400 bales were offered. There was a large attendance of buyers, and bidding was spirited. Prices were very firm on closing rates of ' the February series. Best sorts were a halfpenny dearer; -merinos a halfpenny cheaper. Coarse crossbreds and other sorts firm. Ten ships with wool cargoes are now due. The number of bales available is 310,000. Messrs Dalgety and Company have received the following cablegram from their head office, dated London, April 2 : — " The wool sales opened to-day with a poor selection of wool, large number of buyers, and animated competition, For the bulk of wools prices show a rise of par to |d per Ib compared with closing rates of last series, particularly for fine crossbreds. Total available, including old stocks, 310,000 bales." Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. have received the following cablegram fiom their London house (Messrs Sanderson, Murray, and Co.), dated the 2nd inst :-r" Sales have opened firm, with very large attendance of buyers. Fine crossbreds $d above closing rates of last London pales." The British and New Zealand Mortgage and Agency Co. have received the following cablegram from Messrs Helmuth, Schwartze, and Co., dated London, 2nd inst. : — " The sales opened with large attendance of both home and foreign buyers, and competition is animated. Prices are on the average at par to $d higher than average of last series." Messrs Arthur M'Donald and Co. are in receipt of the following cable from their London agent, ; dated 2nd inst: — "Second series of colonial wool sales opened to-day before a large gathering of buyers. Competition was spirited, and the bulk of wools are at par to £d per lb advance as compared with closing rates of last series."
