The Grain Bag Question.
Editob Witness,— Sir : Lately— very lately —you did what you could to expose how our farmers have been' treated by our dealers refusing to pay them for their bags. Now I hope you will use your pen in exposing how those dealers who are buying " bags extra " are in torn treating the poor farmer in the price paid for his grain, as the following cases will show ; and I make no mere assertions, but am prepared to show you documentary evidence ; such as will convince the most sceptical. ' j First, a miller offered one of our agents 2s 7£d for a lot of 240 bags oats, "bags in " ; and another agents reports having sold the very same lot of oats at 2s 6d, bags 6d. Well, let us see the result : — 240 bags, 4J bushels eaob, 1080 bushels, afc2s7id ... ... ... £U1 15 0 240 of 4£ Vh'ls each, 1080 Less 31b per bag tare 18 > 1082 at 2s 6d ... £133 15 0 Bags,6d 6 0 0 138 15 0 Loss to farmer ... ... £ 3 0 0 Another agent, got a sample of 300 bags sent to get an offer for. but as he didn't know which way the farmer wanted to sell, he thought it as well to get an offer both ways, and submitted the following offers to the fanner— 2s 6d, bags 6a, or 2s 7gd, bags in. Again let us see the result:— 300 bags of 4* bushels, 1360, at 2s 7£d ... £177 3 9 300 of 4 j b'b/la - . each, 1350 | Lees 31b tare 22} bushels 2327*at256d...£165 18 6 Bags, 8d... 710 0 * ■ ■ — 173 8 0 Lois to fanner ... ... £ 3 15 o Showing a loss of £3 15s to the farmer. I sincerely hope you will do what you can to expose this monstrous iniquity.— l am, &c,, Duhedin, April 1. Ex-Fasmbb. "Rough oh Cohns."— Ask for Wells« Bough on Corns."
