THE SAMOAN DISASTER
Bbblin, April 1. The German cruisers Sperber and Alexandra have been ordered to Samoa to replace those lost in the recent gale. Emperor William was profoundly moved upon receipt of the intelligence of the disaster to the German war vessels at Samoa, and afc once consulted Prince Bismarck as to the means to be adopted for the relief of the shipwrecked crews. The Nationalist party affirm that the disaster must not be allowed to cool the ardour of the colonisation policy. Washington, April 1. Admiral Kimberley has been instructed by the authorities to send home 300 of the sailors belonging to the wrecked American war vessels at Samoa. Sydney, April 2. The survivors from the German warships will be forwarded home on April 24. They are expected to arrive in Sydney next week. It has been suggested that a demonstration should be held to mark the citizens' appreciation of the skill of the officers of the Calliope in saving their ship from the general wreck ; also, that steps should -be taken to acknowledge the bravery of the Samoans who assisted in resouing the men from the warships. • Mr Daniel O'Connor, Postmaster-general, has agreed to the request made by the New Zealand Government to grant the next outward San Francisco mail steamer an extension of 24 hours' time in order to allow her to call at Apia, to pick up the American shipwrecked sailors, aud take them on to San Francisco. Auckland, March 2. Captain Kane, of H>M.S Calliope, in a report to the Admiral states that he got as much indicated horse power in steaming out of Apia, though the engines, were raoing, as on the ,day of her trial in smooth water at full speed. The coal he had on board was Westport. Lieutenant Wilson, of the Vandalia, has left for Sydney.
