CRICKET.

NOTES BY SLIP. After a fortnight's spell oq account of bad weather, the matoh Grange v. Albion (Final of Challenge Gap) was concluded on Saturday on the Caledonian ground ; there was greab interest taken in the match, as it was the last cricket for the season. The : ground was in capital order, and the caretaker is deserving of praise for this fcifcch he had prepared. With one wicket down in th« second innings for five runs the Grange commenced to bat, C. Restieaux and Turnbull opening to the "bowling of Turn* bull and Oarr. The third ball from Turnbull proved too much for Reatieaux Baker joined Turnbull and things were made ; merry until the? former played one back to the- bowler after having made nine runs. Carrie,' Parker, Downes,. and Restiieaux were soon disposed of,' scoring 11 runs between them. CraWshaw partnered A. Tomball (who had been batting splendidly),' and carried the score to 60 before' they were separated, the latter being caught in the longfield, after having compiled ' a very' serviceable 21. Crawshaw was clean bowled by M'Lennan shortly after for 26, put together by sound cricket. The innings olosed for 79;'thua leaving the Albions 133 to make to win. M'Lennan and Hutchinson appeared to ' do battle for the Albions, but after making five runs the former batsman was well taken behind the wickets by G. Restieaux. Hutohihson soon afterwards followed. Crawford, as on the previous Saturday,, played well and carefully for 15 runs before he was given out leg-Wore to one from Espie, who had been pat on at Parker's end. Croxford made 15 runs in quick time, and M'Einley scored 10 not out. The innings closing for 61, leaving the Grange victors, with 71 runs to spare, and a reoord of not having suffered defeat for the season. The fielding of both clubs' was very good, more especially the winners, Baker again making a brilliant catch. Downes bowled well throughout, getting six wickets at the cost of 31 runs. For the Albion P. Turnbull; M'l^ennan, and Carr divided honours, and had gooi averages. ASHLEY COUNT! T. PH(BNIX. This match was played on the Caledonian ground on Thursday, and ended in a victory for the visitors by six runs, that being their lead in the first Innings. It seemed a pity that play was not continued till 6 o'clock, the usual time observed here, especially in, one-day, 'matches. Had the home team the usual extra half-hour, victory would have been assuredly theirs. It was at first intended, that a two days' match should be played, beginning' on Monday last and continuing on Tuesday, but the weather willed otherwise. Really the visitors deserved their victory, as all teams do who have coma from afar. Their fielding was exceedingly good, and in bowling Chapman obtained tbe, excellent, average of six wickets for 11 runs. -In battingthey could not appear to the best advantage* owing to the 1 softness of the wicket. In Canterbury the wickets are notably fast. ; The homa team should have done really better with the bat in the first innings. Fifty-nine runs is an exceedingly small score to overtake even on a bowler's wicket. In the second innings they did much better, and, as before stated, would have easily topped' their opponents' total had time permitted. Frith and Malcolm bowled exceedingly well throughout. It is to be hoped the Phcenix will send their best team North next year, in order to meet their cricket' friends there. The wiokets, of which there were two prepared, played exceedingly well. Mr Blaney attended to the commissariat department and rendered every satisfaction. After the spell of bad weather it was a treat to have such a day to play; and although the wicket was slow and scores low, a very interesting and somewhat exciting game was tne result. Ashley County ■ winning the toss, went in. Haskell and Warner were the only players who reached double figures. The former played in his old dashing style,' and some of his drives were particularly good. Warner played carefully and well, and altogether a most serviceable innings. Carisbrook wanting 83 runs to win, went in with every confidence fco make then, but, when two wickets fell for two, things did not look so rosy. Fox and Stroiaach checked the rout, the score reaching 35 before they were parted. Fox played dashing cricket for his 23 Four for 41, five for 42, six for 51, seven for 53 and eight for 57 was not 1 at all like winning Mallard at , this junoture joined; Austin* ana
