LAND AND WATER
Mr J. Stephens, of the National Bank, has forwarded the secretary of the Danedin Amateur Athletic Club a cheque for £5 to be devoted to the purchase of a silver cup as a prize for high jumping at the next sports meeting of the club. If a few others would follow in Mr Stephens' footsteps perhaps amateur athletics would after all flourish in Dunedin. A shooting party, consisting of Messrs W. Telford, D. Stronach, and W. Quin, was out in the beginning of this week (says the Clutha Leader) on the Blue Mountains in quest of deer. Mr Telford only was successful, and he has returned with a magnificent stag with a royal head of horns. Me Telford wounded a second stag, but not being allowed to use dogs in following up, he lost him. The balance sheet submitted at the annual meeting of the Dunediu Lacrosse Club showed the assets to be £13 7s lOd, and the liabilities £5 13s, thus leaving a credit balance of of £7 Us lOd.-The Secretary's report attributed the club's defeat at Christohurch to the swampy nature of the Oval, on which practices were held last season. It was further pointed out thafc last year was a memorable one in the history ot lacrosse in New Zealand, as no lees than four clubs were formed -viz., at Ohristchuroh, Wellington, Oust (near Ohristchurch), and Balolutha. The Committee recommended that the subscription should be raised from 7s <5d to 10s. The Hon. Geo. M'Lean, M.L.0., was re-elected president, Major Goring and Dr Batchelor as ricepreßidents, and Mr Walter Brent as secretary and treasurer. Mr B. Trythall «s captain and Mr D. Buchan as deputy-captain ; committee— Messrs Watson. Wilson, Stilling, P. Y. Wales, Wilkinson, P. Mitchell, and I) . Armstrong. The club signified its Intention ot endeavouring to arrange to play matches against the neighbouring olubs during the coming season, and a number of new members were proposed and elected. ________——
