NOTES BY JACK.

The terrible weather of last week effectually put a stop to all bowling. Notwithstanding the inclemency, however, the Lawrence Club sent three rinks down on St. Andrew's Day to have a match with the Dunedin Club, and the visitors were defeated by a pretty considerable number.

From a valued correspondent at Oamaru I have received an interesting letter— interesting so far as it informs me that the breach between the two clubs there has been— as it should have been long ago— healed, and they have had a friendly contest together. This is as it should be, and I hope that the game they played against each other is only the precursor of many others of a similar nature.

The match on Saturday between the Dunedin and Caledonian Clubs is exciting much interest i in bowling circles, and should be a well-fought ■ battle. As the weather now shows signs of j clearing up, each team will no doubt go in heavily for practice so as to make themselves as efficient as possible before that day. The I matches between the Dunedin and Lawrence I and Oamaru and Phoenix Clubs are detailed be!"low: —

The green was in capital order, and with the exception of an occasional shower or two, the weather was very fine. The play was 21 heads, and subjoined are the players and scores :— DONBDIH.— J Scoular, W Thomson, D Baxter, A M'Diarmid (skip); J Anderson, J F Peake, A W M' Arthur, T Sneddon (skip) ; W Cowie, J Leighton, D Russell, J Thomson (skin). At the close of the game the playipg members adjourned to the pavilion, and a social half-hour was spent. Several matches were played among members during and following the above match, and there were many trials of skill in the lawn tennis court. A good many visitors, including a num- \ ber of ladies, we're present during the afternoon, j A match was played on the 29th November on the Meadowbank green between the Oamaru ] and Phoenix Cluba. This being the first time j the local clubs have met in friendly contest con- ! siderable interest was taken in the event. It was generally supposed that the Oamaru Club had the advantage over the later established ' Phconix Club, more especially as the _ letter's players have been prevented from practising on j account of bheir green being under repair. Still | the prestige established by their victory over the Mosgiel Club last season put the Oamaru Club upon their mettle. Considering the wet and cold weather we have had lately Mr Baird, the keeper, succeeded in having the green in praiseworthy condition, and the weather managed to remain fine until the close of the game, when a i heavy downpour caused a haaty retreat to the bowl-house, when Captain Turpie, president of ! the Oamaru Club, proposed "Success to the Visitors," Mr Headland, the vice-president of the Phoenix, returning the compliment, which Mr Fleming, in a happy speech, duly acknowledged. The game was played in four rinks, in 21 heads, and the following are the respective rinks and scores : — Oamabu.— P Dooley, J Smith, J Familtou, J Martin (skip) ; G Greenfield, W Menzies, B J Dowling, N- Fleming (skip) ; J Menziei, 3 L Tait, R Lemm, F Turpie (skip); M Young, W Williamson, B Motlison, J Gemmell (skip). Play began at 2.30. At 3 o'olock the gama stood at 13 to 4 ; at 3.30, at 35 to 18 ; and at 4 o'clock at 66 to 31.

I have also to thank my Oamaru correspondent for the following report :— « The members of the Oamaru Bowling ;Club met on the 30th November to bid farewell to Mr Matthew Young, whose departure to Wellington deprives the club of one of its most prominent members. To signalise the occasion, a complimentary match was played between sides ohosen by Mr Young and Mr Dowling, which, after a severe tussle, was won by Mr Young's side, his own excellent trundling and judicious skipping materially influencing the game, which at one time was all against him. At the conclusion, the president called upon the members to wish Mr Young every success in his new sphere, expressing the regret that the members felt at losing him, for besides being one of the most reliable bowlers they had, he had always been willing to assist the management by his counsel in committee, and had gained the esteem of all who had the pleasure of meeting him on the green. The members present heartily endowed the president's remarks, and Mr Young, in responding, thanked them all for the honour done him. He said he had been engaged in all the hard fought matches the chib had had with kindred societies, and he was glad that he had the opportunity at the last of assisting in the success of Thursday's match with the Phoenix Club, and was delighted to have won his last game on the Meadowbank green, where he had spent many an enjoyable evening. The following are the results of yesterday's 1 match : — Mb Yotjng's Sedb.— Cuaninghame, PatersoDi Martin, Mollison (skip); Greenfield, Darley, Gemmell, Young (skip). Mr Dowmng's Sidb.— Stevenson, Turpie, Kennedy, Familton (skip); Fleming, Grant, Lemm, Dowling (skip). MB YOUNG'S SIDB. MR DOWMKG'B SIDE. MrMollison'srink... 22 Mr Familton'fl rink... 21 MrYoung'»rink ... 26 Mr Dowling » rink ... 20 48 41 I am glad to hear that the Mount Ida Club has also decided to join the association, as will be seen from the following clipping from the local paper : — " The annual meeting of the members of the Bowling Qreen and Lawn Tennis Club

'waslSld "on Satof3ay;evenrng;theprelid«ttHMr \ H.~ "Wilson) presiding. The treasurer (Mr Harper) reported that the Bum of £21 53 had been paid to Mr Hosie as rent for the green for the season 1887-SB. The following were elected office-bearers for the ensuing season :—President, Mr R. Johnstone ; vice-president, Mr R. H. Browne; secretary and treasurer, Mr B. Harper ; committee — Messrs Brackenridge, Hickson, Black, and Dr Whitton; green ranger, 'Mr Brackenridge. It was resolved — 'That the Mount Ida Bowling Club affiliate with the New Zealand Bowling Association; and that the entrance fee for the same be paid by levy on members.' It was ?also resolved— 'That the secretary write to the Otago Association asking that this olub be permitted to play two rinks instead of three in all medal matches.' Votes of thanks to Mr R. Hosie and the secretary (Mr Harper) concluded the business." I am sure they will be oordially received into the ranks. The firßt tournament between members of the Taieri Bowling Olub was drawn by the committee on the night of the 28th; It is to be a handicap match of 2t points for a set of bowls presented by Mr J. H. Morrison, one of the vicepresidents of the club. The first round must be played through by the close of the' play on December 8. The following players have been selected by the Taieri Club to represent them in the match with the Roslyn to be played on the Roslyn green on Saturday first :— J Oughton, A C Thompson, W M'Leod, D Mafckie (skip); W Smith, W Hunter, W Weir, J Turabull (skip); W Low, R Churton, T Mackie, J C Smith (akip).; W Wedderspoon, 'J C Hodges, George Howell, J H Morrison (skip). Emergencies, D Campbell, W A Tumbull, W Melrose, H Purvis. A prominent member of one of our local clubs writes me as follows:— -"Our bowling clubs would often like to have a trip to Oamaru in order to test the skill of their friends in the White City, but unfortunately time is an object, as few people can devote two or three days to a match. Now this can be easily obviated if clubs intending to compete would go from Dunedin by the Beautiful Star, which leaves the Rattray street wharf twice a week at 10 p.m; and reaches Oanwru at about 5 o'clock in the morning of the following day. Excellent accommodation is provided on this favourite little boat. Captain Brewer and the officers are most courteous, and the providoring department leaves nothing to be wished for ; while prior to passengers leaving the boat at Oamaru they can be supplied with a most excellent breakfast. In addition to this, should any team wish to visit Oamaru upon match purposes, there is no doubt — upon application to the Union 1 Company's headquarters here — that arrangements could be made to delay the Star for an hour or 60 at Oamaru on the return trip. The fare for the return trip is only 10s ; meals, Is 6d. The advantages of a passage of this kind will no doubt strike bowlers, and I expect to hear of a number of matches played at Oamaru this season." This is a most excellent suggestion and will no doubt be borne in mind by any club which purposes to visit the Limestone City, as it will give the whole day, thus enabling a visiting club to play matohes with both local clubs, and the members being actually only one day away from their business.
