AN OLD SONG.
I wandered out of the city— From the happy crowd passed byWhile the moon slioue down from tho heavens From the soft still 6inr.mer Bky ; For only I seemed lonely In all that busy throng, When there floated through the silence The sound of a 6\veet old song. " For my heart was hot and restless, And my life wa9 full of care, And the burden laid upon me Seemed greater than I could bear ; 33ut now it has fallen from me." I turned to starlit sky, And murmured, " Oh, God of heaven 1 Let my load, too, pass by." But only the singer answered In sweet, sad woids t.i me: " But now db has fallen from melt is buried in the sea !" And I turned my eyes to the ocean, That calmly and moonlit lay, And wished, like the swe u t dead poet, It would bear me far away ! How often — oh 1 how often — Since that singer sweet has died, Have the hopes of men and women Gone out with the ebbing tide. How often— oh ! how of tenHave " care encumbered men " Grown faint and worn and weary, And prayed to die*since then ! " But now it has fallen from me," The singer did repeat, And the tones of the voice in comfort; Went sweetly along the street. " Bub dow ifc has fallen from melt is buried in the sea I" And I turned, my heart still praying Send the same sweet peace to me ! —Alice.
