SOUTHLAND NOTES.

(Feom Oub Own Correspondent.) Intercargill, September 8. The trial match played here to day was a decided improvement on any of the previous games. The match was Probable Fifteen against seventeen Possibles. The latter played with a strong wind the whole of the game, but despite this assistance the former won by eight tries to a goal and a try. The passing and dribbling of the winners were very good, but in taking the ball on the line out they were decidedly weak. Twemlow (2), R. Galbraith (2), A. Galbraith, Jenkins, Ekensfceen, and Cuff (one each( were the try-getters. All attempts to kick a goal, owing, , no doubt, to the strong wind, were fruitless. The following team has been choscn°to represent Southland against Otago : — Full Back. W. Hawke (Pirates) -Hai played all this season as three-quarter back. Kicks fairly, collars well, and is very good at stopping a rush. Three-quarter Backs. J. Hope (Invercargill) — Ihis player is so well known in Dunedin that comment! is almost useless. If he gets the slightest show there will be at least three points to counterbalance the score of Otago. It. Galbraith (Invercargill) — Is also well kuown in Dunediii. Has fallen off considerably since herepresented Ot'igO. J M Master (Star) — A first season's player. Is fast, kicks tolerably well, but lacks experience. Half Backs. P. Cuff (Star)— Represented Southland last year. Has considerably improvedsince then. A small, but strong and dodgy player. A. Tapper (Pirates) — Played in this position last year for Southland. A dashing player, but somewhat excitable. Does not kick enough. Is usually very unselfish. Forwards. P. H. Cox (InvereargilH— Not quite fast enough, but an honest grafter, and untiring. K. Dagger (Gore)— Has earned his place. Gets on to the opposing backs very amartly. V. Ekensteen (Pirates)— As good a specimen of a forward as one would wish to have; heavy, fast, and speaks not. A. Galbraith (Pirates) — In condilion could not be excelled, being heavy and fast, but am inclined to think the Match Committee have looked just a " lettle " too much at past performances. Hope not. E. Hawke (Pirates)— lnclined to shirk the scrum, Ib the fastest of the forwards, and should show up. J. Jenkins (Star)— Dribbles very well but shirks the hard work. L. Murphy (Star)— One of the hardest working in the team, and always on h« ball. H. Treseder (Invercargill)— ls better than ever. He is «oing to help you get licked all he can. F. Twemlow (luvercargill)— A big, powerful forward. Is a whale in the loose, but in the line out his play is faulty. Considerable regret was expressed that the Wallis brothers (of Gore) had not come into the late trial matches, as the committee would have liked to have had as many of the country players in the representative match as possible, but under the circumstances they had no other alternative than to omit these two Gore men.

Thomson (of Mataura) would also have had a good chance of being chosen, but at the last moment his services have been transferred to another district. Given fine weather the match will be well attended, and whether we can give your men a good game or not, I can promise them a fair field and no favour. (Continued elsewhere.)
