OAMARU NOTES.
Athletic v. Oamaru. , The annual football match between the above clubs was played on Thursday, 9th inst., on the Nprth road cricket ground. The ground 'was soft after the rrecentt t xain, and a slight drizzle fell during the game', making good running and passing out .the question, but notwithstanding this one of the Oamaru haif backs seemed to be at home on it. There was a large attendance, including a good sprinkling of the fair stx, despite the weather. The following were,' the teams: — Athletic : Full.back— W. Courtnay ; .three-quar-ters—W. Glass,' W..Crombie, and H. Johnston ; halves— D. Hurst 'and A. M'Culloch; forwards—F. Waddell (c&pcain), W. Whyte,' ' J. Kleeber, M. Connelly, 3, Jardjne, G. Jardine, H. Davis, J. Barclay and C. Lewis Oamaru: Full back — R. Hewat; three-quarters -r W.Thomas, C. Ross, and W. Grenfell ; halves— ,H. Cork and R. Taylor; forwards— H. Snow (captain)J L. Wilson, H. Meek, A. Moule, A. Grenfell, Henderson, A. Hesketh, H. Baker, and W. Ferens. Mr W. Burns wielded the flag for the Athletics; Mr Stronach for the Oamaru; while Mr W. M'Donald acted as referee. The Athletics won the toss, and elected to kick with the wind. Snow kicked off at 3.30. The ball was well returned into touch. Being thrown out, a scrum was formed, but the Athletics being a long way the heavier carried all the scrums. H. Cork made some good runs, but the collaring of Glass, and . M'Culloch was very good. The first spell euded without any score. Hurst kicked off iv the second spell into touch. A dribbling rush by the Oamaru, forwards, headed by Ferens, took the ball across the Athletics' line, but it was , lost through it rolling into touch in goal. After tho kick put the Athletics played a, ,tight game. They gradually worked,, the ball on to their opponents' goal line, where, ' after some scrums, Waddell secured the ball from a scrum and crossed the line amid great cheering. Hurst took the kick, but owing to the state of the ball ; he, failed. Time was then called. , For the winners all played a good game, but Waddell rabbited £00 much on his knees in the scrum. For the 'Oamaru, Thomas, Ross, and Cork played well amongst, the backs, and the forwards played a,splendid game to a'man. Henderson, an ex-Kaikorai man, played well. The umpires apd referee gave general satisfaction. Aftev the usual cheers the teams left the ground. Waddell was carried shoulder high to the pavilion. The Athletics are, going down to play the return match with Zingari- Richmond in a week or two, when the latter will have a good match. The Excelsior First play the Oamaru Second on Thursday, August 16, when an exciting contest is expected. The Waitaki High School is sending a team down to play the Dunedin High School Second next week. Ditop Kick.
