PORTOBELLO.
August 10.-Some monthß since.Mr Moss.having an idea that a trade could be opened up between Port Chalmers, Portobello, and Broad Bay, chartered the Union Company's steam launch Kate, whioh has since been daily rnnning across the harbour. The result having proved satisfactory, Mr Moss determined to place permanently in the trade a steamer suitable in every respect, and for this purpose he purchased the Edina, which has vow taken up the running in place of the Kate. The Edina, which was formerly known as the Sappho, has during the past few months received a thorough overhaul. She has been stripped, caulked, recoppered, new decks laid, whilst the comfort for her passengers has not been neglected. A very neat little cabin for ladies has been fitted up af c, also one for gentlemen forward. She has received a new steel boiler, which was built by Messrs Morgan, Cable, and Stevenson, of 10-horse power, capable of carrying a pressure of lOOlbi to the square inch ; new engines by Messrs Young and Gardner have also been fitted of the diagonal high-pressure principle, with two sin cylinders and 6in stroke ; aud the Edina is now in every respect as good a vessel as when she left the builders' hands, and no doubt she will be well patronised and Mr Mobs rewarded for his enterprise. She will make two trips daily to Dunedin, which will be a great boon to the Rettlers on the Peninsula side, commencing about the middle of September.
