Thursday, August 9. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
FIRST READINGS. The following bills wero read a first time :—: — Sheep Acb Amendment, Customs Duties Consolidation Act Amendment, Post Office ( foreign parcels), and Tobacco Act Amendment. tjill passed. The MiniDg Act. 18S6 Amendment Bill was lead a third time at tor discussion by 20 to 9. MILITARY AND VOLUNTKER LAND CLAIMS. The Hon. E. C. J.. STEVENS moved the third reading of the N-ival aud Military Settlers,, and Volunteers Land Bi.!. The Hon. G. M. WATE RHO USE moved an amendment that the bill be laid aside. Had it been competent to amend the measure he would have moved in that direction, but as it was a money bill and the Speaker had ruled that it could not be amended he had no alternative but to move his amandment in the present shape. The Hon. Sir F. WHITAKER pointed out that if the bill was laid aside it would not put an end to many of the claims. The Council divided on the question- that the words proposed to be omitted stand part of the question. The following was the division list — Ayes 13, Noes 17:— Ayes. — Messrs Acland, Barnicoat, Hart, Lahmann, Mautell, M'Lean, Millar, , Oliver, SPharazyn, Pollen, Reynolds, Swanson, Walker, Waterhouse, Wigley, Williams, Wilson. Noes. — Messrs Baillie, Buckley, Dignan, Grace, Martin, Morris, Richmond, Shepherd, Sbevens, Taiaroa, Wahawaha, Whitaker, Whitmore. The bill was laid aside. BILLS DEALT WITH. The following bills were finally passed : — Uaiapoi Drillshed, Timaru Harbour Board Loan Act 1885 Amendmeut, and Ngaruawahia Cemetery Reserve Leasing.
