Last Chance Gold Mining Company.

The following letters have appeared in the Da'ly Tim?s :-r , Sir", — I notice in yoiir last week } s issue a remark by. your Wakatipu correspondent under Mining Notes, re the above mine, congratulating the manager on the manner in which ho has oonducted the works, &ci As prefcS notices like this are only calculated to mislead shareholders as to the way in which the mine is progressing, I venture to think that you will do the justice to insert the following which places a rather different aspect on affairs. The works were commenced last August under the present manager, who after sinking for four months got the shaft to a depth of 80ffc at an expenditure of nearly half the available capital. After this outlay he did what he should have done at first, and commenced boring to find out where was the deepest grouud, and the result of this boring was such as to determine the directors to abandon the shaft, look upon the money sunk therein as lest, and recommence sinking on .the other side of the flat. This is the work now being proceeded with under the same manager. Nine-tenths of the capital has been expended in assisting this manager to make experiments. The new shaft has now reached tho dead-water level, and the remaining one-tenth will be expended in pumping water. The only news the shareholders obtain of the mine is contained in notes like that referred to at the commencement of this letter, which must surely be inspired by the manager himself, as no sane man living in the district could pen such misleading statements, knowing the whele circumstances of the case. I shall be happy to substantiate all the3e particulars should any shareholder desire it, and enclose my card — I am, &c, One who Worked on the CLAisr. Dunedin, August 11. Sir, — I have read the letter in your issue of this morning signed by " One who worked on the claim" calling in question the statement made by your Arrowfcown correspondent as to the manner iv which the manager of the above company has carried out his work. I have no hesitation in saying that I can point to the writer of the letter without availing myself of the pleasure of inspecting this aristocratic miner's card. I have no doubt other shareholders will be able to recognise the author from the style of the remarks, which simply emanates from a dissatisfied workman who takes thi3 method of revenging himself ou the manager in .consequence of, his not being put on (being then a shareholder) before practical miners. If " One who worked ou the claim" had put his name to his letter, I am certain no notice

would be taken of it by shareholders, as it is simply an attempt to damage a company of which he is no longer a member, through " force of circumstances over which he had no control."—l am, &c, One who Did Not Work on the Claim. August 13. Sir, — Referring to the letter in this morning's edition over the signature " Oae Who Did Not Work in the Claim," perhaps the full meaning of Quern Deus vult perdere, prius dementat will come home to the writer when he attends the next general meeting of the company and hears the report of the "congratulation deserving" manager on pumping. — I am, &c, One Who Worked in the Claim. Dunedin, August 14.
