The attendance at the Exhibition averages 7000 daily. The Premier, Mr Gillies, has interviewed Admiral Fairfax with the object of helping him to lay before the Lords of the Admiralty the desirableness of expediting a survey for the Pacific cable. The admiral replies to the effect that although the number of surveying vessels is limited, he thought two or three might be spared if the Imperial Government could be convinced of the urgency of the matter. It is feared that a boating party comprising three persons, who left Jarvis Bay. on the 20th ult., have met with some accident, as since their departure they have not been heard of. Mr Quong Tart, a leading Chinese merchant, has received a letter from Hongkong to the effect that the refusal of the Australian colonies to allow Chinese to land has excited a feeling of great indignation in China, and that several meetings have been held, at which resolutions wcr,e passed protesting against the treatmenc which the Chinese had received. The meetings further resolved that the matter should not be allowed to rest without an endeavour being made to obtain fair play for the Chinese. Afc Waogsnui John Ellis, a recent arrival from Auckland, made a savage attack upon the landlady of the Custom House Hotel with a fire shovel.
