In a village of L a minister one Sunday, when about to publish the banns of marriage, discovered that he could not find the names. Not wishing to make a long pause, he repeated : " I publish the banns o£ marriage between " Still no signs of the paper. He began again : "I publish the banns of marriage between " Still no papers could be found. He began once more : "I publish the banns of inaniage be-, twnen " The clerk, wishing lo en'.ightun lii'n as to •where the paper containing the names was, cried out, to the consternation of the congregation : " Atween the cushion and the desk, sir."
