Chapter VII.
That night the children had been asleap about an hour when they were awakened by a loud crash. They ran out of their cave and found that there was a huge hole in the roof of the cavern through which .poured numbers of strange gnomep, who were soon engaged in a terrible struggle with the old gnomes.
The children slipped passed unnoticed. They scrambled out of the hole, and found themselves at the edge of a high precipice.
" Come back, Bessie," screamed Clara. Too late 1 the earth crumbled away and Bessie slipped forward.
" Catch me, Clara, I am fall — . Hullo ! How ! Why 1 said " Bessie,*rubbing her eyes. " Bessie, however did. we — " commenced Clara. " Get here," finished Bessie promptly. The gnomes and the lizards," said Clara in a confused tone. " Was it a dream ? " asked Bessie. " It must be late; we had better go home," said Clara, quietly lifting her basket from the log. (Concluded.)
