EXPORT OF CATTLE.

Mr Wm. Cowan's Consignment of Ayrshire Cattle to Melbourne. By the Mararoa, which sailed on the 26th ult.» Mr Wm. Cowan, of Lower Tumai, forwarded to Melbourne 12 selected animals from his herd of high-class Ayrshires. By breeding exclusively from some of the best strains of blood obtainable, Mr Cowan's herd is now the embodiment of what admirers of Ayrshire cattle seek for — viz., quality combined with usefulness for dairy purposes. The fame of the herd has been well established by numerous successes at leading as well as local shows in this and the adjoining province, and the following condensed particulars concerning the animals sent to Melbourne will show that their credentials are unexceptionable. Of the three bulls sent over, the first deserving notice is Baron Renfrew, because he has been largely used in the herd. He was bred by Messrs Cargill and Anderson, well-known importers and breeders of Ayrshires in Otago. Baron Renfrew's sire was Master Jack (imp.), dam May Rose, by Baron of Drumlanrig 2nd (imp.) ; grand dam Lily (imp.). Baron Renfrew has gained prizes at Dunedin, Waikouaiti, Taieri, and Palmerston. At the Taieri, when a yearling, he won tho champion medal for best Ayrshire bull in the show. Last year (1887) his progeny as yearlings won first prizes at Dunedin, Oamaru, and Palmerston; also, the Sires' Produce Stakes at Oamaru for best yearling bull and yearling heifer. Master Jack (sire of Baron Renfrew) was by Old Master Jack, winner of eight first prizes in Scotland. The dam of Master Jack — Rose — won six prizes in Scotland. Major, another bull shipped, was bred by Mr Cowan. Major's breeding is unexceptionable, for his sire is Baron Renfrew ; dam Jessie, by Young Baron, by Baron 2nd of Drumlanrig ; grand dam Jenny, by Cardigan — Ivy, by Ayrshire Jock (imp.) Major gained first prize at Oamaru and first prize at Palmerston in Champion Produce Stakes. Jessie, Major's dam, was a winner at Dunedin, Oamaru, Waikouaiti, and Taieri. Young Baron, sire of Jessie, while in Cowan's possession was a prizetaker at Dunedin, Oamaru, Palmerston, Waikouaiti, and Blueskin. At Dunedin he won the champion medal. Mr Cowan sold him to a New South Wales buyer, for whom he won first prize in his class and champion prize at the Centennial Exhibition in Sydney. The third bull in the consignment under notice, Earl of Carrick, is by Baron Oxhill (imp.), dam Flora 2nd, by Cashmere Jack (imp.) ; grand dam Flora Ist, by Baron 2nd of Drumlanrig (imp.). Flora 2nd, dam of Earl of Carrick, won the gold medals at 'Dunediu and Oamaru for Ayrshire cow, and two of her progeny have won at Dunedin, Oamaru, and Palmerston shows.
