A FAST HORSE.
A few weeks ago a sale of horses took place at a well-known repository, and one lob was as poor broken-kneed a back as was ever seen anywhere. The horse was brought forward aud fcbe auctioneer, like most of his class, began lauding what he had to dispose of. " Gentlemen," said he, " I have now tne pleasure to bring before your notice a really first-class animal. Will anyone make a bid of one hundred pounds for it ? "
One of the onlookers made a first bid of two pounds. •'Really, gentlemen, this is too bad. An offer of two pounds for such an animal is simply ridiculous. Only the day before yesterday it did its two miles in 6min, and two pounds is all that is offered for ie ! Have you all done at two pounds ? Going for two pounds ! Going for the mean sum of two pounds ! For the last time —gone ! "
The purchaser took away the sorry brute, and was not long in ascertaining that, in place of doing its two miles in six minutes, it could not do one in an hour. He went back furiously to the auctioneer, and asked him if he did not say the horse had done bwo miles in six minutes. " Most decidedly," said the auctioneer.
"And where might this event have come off ? " asked the irate purchaser, endeavouring to smother his anger.
"In a railway truck," was the unabashed reply.
