OAMARU JOCKEY CLUB.
(North Ofcago Times).
A special general meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club was held in the Royal Hotel last Friday night, -when there were present Messrs Dooley, Barton, Atkinson, Waters, Johnston, Belcher, and George Greenfield (secretary). Mr Atkinson presided.
The balance sheet, as prepared by the secretary and audited and found correct by Messrs Otterson and Lintot t, was submitted.
Mr Atkinson said it would advisable simply to receive the report, and leave its adoption for the annual meeting.
Messrs Atkinson's and Barton's report was then read as follows: — "In submitting our report of the financial position of the club in accordance with the resolution passed at a committee meeting held on the 12th June, 1888, we think it right to state that we have not considered it necessary to examine in detail the account and balance sheet prepared and audited by Messrs Otterson and Lintott, as these gentlemen appear to have taken considerable pains and trouble in thoroughly investigating the club's accounts, and for the purposes of our report we have adopted such account and balance sheet." The balance sheet showed a ■cash balance in hand at the commencement ■of the season 1877-8 of £34 4s 7d; and on -fche year's workings a deficiency of £2 2s 6d. <« We have also to report that in accordance with the resolution passed at the committee meeting held on the 12th June last, we examined the various accounts and extracted therefrom a list of the various sums paid by the club for improvements to the racecourse, amounting to £25 or thereabouts, and on the 16th June we waited upon the lessees with the view to get a refund of this amount or some part thereof. After some discussion the lessees promised to consider the matter and communicate their decision in due course, but up to the time of the preparation and signing of this report we have received no communication from the lessees."
Mr Atkinson stated that there being no reply from the lessees showed a great laok of courtesy, as it was fully three weeks since +hey were waited upon. It was generally agreed that the club was in a very satisfactory condition ,and in its history the financial position had been incomparab^p worse. Mr Johnston said that at one time a (hbscriptioQ was levied of £10 on members, and some contributed up to £20 to redeem the financial condition of the club.
Mr Atkinson observed that there was undoubtedly an inclination on the part of the present members of committee to retire. It was a matter for another meeting to discuss the question of the club's continuance.
Mr Barton said that were the report published it might induce many who now held aloof to come forward and take part in carrying on the club. The report was received.
It was decided that the annual meeting should be called for the next Friday evening.
