OUR AUCKLAND SPORTING LETTER.

(From Otjb Special Spobtihg Cobbbsfondent.)

Auckland, July 17.

As Sylvia (the dam of Martini- Henry) bad thi3 season proved in foal to Nordenfeldfc, there was, I need scarcely say, great joy at Sylvia Park, as there were great hopes of her producing another colt equal to the Derby and Or.p winner. These hopes were, however, dashed 1 o the ground last week when it was found thtt she had slipped her foal. The occurrence is much to bs deplored, as the daughter of Fisher* man is now well into the sere and yellow leaf.

One of the most improved of the coming three year-olds in this district is Leopold, by Leolim 8 — Lovebird, who is receiving his education : t the hands of J. Kean. He is perhaps a little on the small side, but is wonderfully well put together. That he knows how to gallop he h«s shown on several occasions, and should he go m all right will repay watching. He is a beautiful mover, and the manner in which he fought out his races as a two-year-old stamped bim as one likely to turn out a good stayer.

Bangle (the full sister to Necklace) is now au early attendant at EUerslie, accomp&nied by the Musket — Steppe colt Taitai. The mare looks much improved, but I doubt her ever recording performances equal to those of her sister, though, fit and well, she will take some beating over sprint courses. Rataplan, the half brother to Nelson, who is also in Chaffe's hands, is being spelled. He is one of the sort that would, I think, bo all the better for the application of the knife.

Ted Kelly and the Messrs Twohill have, I .learn from a private letter from Sydney, had a fall out over the leasing of Cinderella to a wellknown Sydney sport. The mare has left Kelly's stable and is now located at Kelso. I believe that Kelly intends sueing Twohill for 10 per cent, on all the mare's winnings during the past two seasons. The Marquis of Queensberry was a passenger by the ' Frisco mail steamer on Monday. Dv • iDg the stay of the steamer the " Markis" ,was driven out to EUerslie, and from thence to Kean's establishment at Kohimarama, winding up with a call at Sylvia Park.

Ted Kelly's horses, Mystery, Paddy, and Octopus, were seized last week under distraint for reut ; Kelly was to-day adjudged a bankrupt.

FOOTBALL,

Ponsonby v. Auckland was a well contested game. The former team won by 3 points to nil. The scores were obtained by Hobson, Stephenson, and Joller, who got a try each, no goals being kicked. In Gordon v. North Shore the latter had a weak team, and Gordon had the best of the game. Herrold was in grand form and scored two tries, and Dixon and Moginnie one each.
