A SURVIVOR OF THE WAIRAU MASSACRE.
Blenheim, July 9
Andrew Croudis, 80 yeara of age, was found dead this morning ou the outskirts of the town. He used to be a survey hand, and wns the only survivor of the famous Wairau massacre in 1843. He had led a vagabond life, prefeiriog it fct> the last, and knocking about alone.
[The fcelegiam is incorrect, in stating that Oroudis was the only survivor of the Wairau massacre, as there, were several who escaped, including the Hon. Mrßarnicoat. Th*. number of Europeans killed afc Wairau was 22, and fiv« were wounded ; 13 out of fche 22 were killed during the lighting, and nine were afterwards butchered. Among those who fell were Captain Wakefield and Mr Thompson, police magistrate. It was after this event that Knavaraha retired from Nelson to Otaki, in Wellington.]
