" The Reign of Grace."
Editoe witness— Sir : Reading an extract in your paper from Carlyle's "Life of Frederick the Great," which bore upon the late conroversy of "The Reign of Grace," I thought the following extract by another good man (Thackeray) might please you to reproduce. I found it amongst Thackeray's ballads, being an imitation of Beranger, and entitled " Jolly Jack." — I am, &c, Dunedin, May 18. B. G. Lank. JOLLY JACK. {Thackeray.) And wheu Jack prayed, as oft he would, lie humbly thanked his Maker; " I am," said he, " 0 Father, good 1 < Nor Catholic nor Quaker ; (Jive each his creed, let each proclaim His catalogue of curses ; I trust in Th-e, and not in them, In Thee and in Tfjy mercies I 11 Forgive me if, 'midst all Thy work 9, No hint I see of damning ; And think there's faith among the Turks, And hope for c'en the Brahmin. Harmless my mind is, and my mirth, And kindly is my laughter : I cannot see the smiling earth, And think there's hell hereafter." "Jolly Jack." (" Ballads and Poems.")
— "What is it about the cold weather freezing up all the avenues of buisness 1 " asked an interested womaD of her husband. " What is it llt is bosh. I had more bills sent into me to-day than any day this year. You never can freeze the man you owe. The other fellow ia always frozen up." A Pool Once More.— 11 For ten years my wife was confined to her bed with such a complication of ailments that no doctor conld tell what" was the matter or cure her. and I -used up a small fortune in humbug stuff. Six months ago I saw aU. S. flag, with Dr Soule's American Hop Bitters on it, and I thought I would be a fool once more. I tried it, but my folly proved to be wisdom. Two bottles cured her, she is now as well and strong as any man's wife, and it eoßfe, me only two dollars. Such folly Days.— H,W., Detroit, Mich.-" Free Pww,"
