TYNDHAM.

May 21".—The meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society, held on Thursday, was very well attended, the ladies turning out in large numbers, no doubt the result of the subject of the essay of the evening —"Dress," by Dr Stockwell. The discussion which followed savoured rather more of the amusing than the instructive. Messrs Paull, M'Kay, Hilton, Raymond, Clark, and the president took part in it. The monthly magazine was also issued, and contains some interesting matter, although its contributions so far are rather tame. , Unemployed.—The sum of £600 has been handed over to the County Council for the purpose of providing employment to some of the Invercargill unemployed. I notice that a gang is to be given work up the Wyndham Valley breaking metal. I feel sure the action of the Government in this matter will be heartily concurred in. There is something considerably more practicable in stipulating that the unemployed shall be engaged at work only beyond a radius of 20 miles from Invercargill than employing them on the Great Swamp railway. Grain.—During the present month a larger proportion of grain has been delivered at the railway station than on any previous occasion. The reason is probably that the roads are so good that farmers are anxious to hr.ye their grain delivered before the weather breaks. Ido not remember ever having seen the roads in such good order at this season of the year, and settlers are wise in making every exertion to get their grain away.
