THE SILVER EXCITEMENT AT THE OWEN.
Some specimens of silver ore from the Owen reef has been received in Christchurch. The assays of various samples taken from different parts are said to range from 630z to 1500oz of silver to the ton, while at the same time there ' are a few pennyweights of gold and 53 per cent, of lead, Leases are being applied for right and left. The following significant telegram is stated by the Press to have been received by a Christfchurch resident from a mining engineer of considerable experfence in reference to the reported silver lode in the Owen district, Nelson : — " I happen to know 1 the lode many years ago, and advise you not to touch. It is a galena lode with a small percentage of silver, and in a desperate country for working." Nelson, May 11. News received in* town to-night sbates that there is considerable excitement at the Owen respecting the silver lode discovered there. Eight claims of 30 acres have been pegged off by 10 different parties, and there was a race to get applications in. The claims extend for one mild, from the left hand of the Owen river, through limestone country, towards the mountain and Wangapeke. The lode is said to be 3ft thick, and the ore is reported to be rich!
