BOWLING.

I {Secretaries are , requested to forward particulars Of | games played, and of forthcoming matches.) FIXTURES. Green Island v. Lawrence, on Lawrence green, April 7., NOTES BY JACK. The tournament which was arranged by the New Zealand Bowling Association to come off < during the Easter holidays at Dunedin commenced on Friday morning. . The weather had been very stormy for a few days previously, and as a natural consequence the greens were all very heavy. Friday morning was fair but cloudy, and the proceedings were entered upon by some interclub and medal matches being played on the Caledonian and Dunedin greens. On j the former, a match was played with the Canterbury Club, in which the visitors were defeated by seven points, the scores being 49 — 42, although up to the very last head it was almost a toss up who would win. On the Dunedin green a medal match was played between the Lawrence and Christchurch Clubs, in which the club from the north of the . Waitaki showed their undoubted superiority over the visitors from the goldfields, the scores being : Christchurch, 85 ; Lawrence, 42. The preliminaries being got over, each and all adjourned to strengthen the inner man by having lunch preparatory to the real fight of the tournament. Punctually at 1.3Q p.m. the rink matches were commenced simultaneously on the' Dunedin, Roslyn, and Caledonian greens. The games were time ones, of two and a-half hours duration, and just when they were 'finished the heavens were opened and the rain descended in torrents. Notwithstanding this, however, a great number of single-handed matches were played off, the players being thoroughly drenched in the rproceBs. r proce8s. The rain continued .to fall continuously' until about 10 on Saturday morning, which of course put playing out of the question for that day, although some were venturesome enough to play off their single-handed ties. One oi these was played en the Caledonian green, which was thoroughly soaked 'and in some places covered with water.' The combatants could not get near the jack, and feeling angry and disgusted at themselves for making such wretched -play, "jacked" it up, and agreed to decide who would be %he victor by a game of cribbage, this being more congenial to their.feelings in such uncomfortable weather. The committee of management postponed all the rink matches until Monday morning, and as the sun shone out beautifully on that day it was anticipated that a good day would result, but these hopes were dashed to the ground, as at dinner time the clerk of the weather again opened his valves and it rained cats and dogs the whole afternoon again, and proceedings had once more to be stopped. i > In the, evening a smoke concert was held in Watson's large dining room, which was well attended'; the chair was ably filled by Mr Mowat, the president 'of the association, supported on the right by Messrs Struthers and Carlton, and on the left by Messrs Ashby and Dawsori. Amongst those present was Mr Hyman, representative of the Dunedin Brewery Company, who responded to the toast' of the health of Mr Mark Moss, of Melbourne, the generous donor of the first prize for the rink tournament—a massive silver cup— and in the course of his, remarks he said that Mr Moss was at present in Britain, but that he intended to return to Victoria by the American route, and therefore he would spend some little time in Dunedin; and he added that it was in every way likely that the proprietors of 1 the Dunedin Brewing Company would next year again present, a cup to be played for by the i bowlers, a remark which was received with great applause. A number of toasts were given, and excellent music and songs provided by the members of the | Dunedm' Orchestral Association (which also numbers a good few bowlers amongst its ranks), and a very pleasant evening was spent. ' ' > Tuesday morning broke gloriously. It seemed as if the gods were tired oi tormenting us poor

mbrtels.v^th any, more muddy weather, and aa a consequence the spirits of the players rose, and the remaining matches were entered upon with more zest. The conclusion of the rink match between Con way (Roslyn) and Ogg (Caledonian) was very exciting. When time was called they had tied at 18, and they consequently played another end which resulted in tha Caledonians winning by two. Taieri winning by a majority of 6 points. The Taieri Club deserve great credit for •carrying off the first prize, being a very young iclub— the baby of the association — and the win nvas a very popular one with those present. During the continuance of the matches there was igreab excitement, especially during the play off ■between the Mosgiel and Caledonian. The successful players at each end were loudly cheered by the spectators, of whom there were a large number present. Single-handed Matches. first ties. G S White (17) beat J 0 Maddison (151. The following are the players who have to compete to finish the single-handed tournament : — Russell plays Carswell, Eraser, or Nalder, White playing the winner. White played a very steady game throughout, and well deserves to win the first prize. For the third prize for the rink tournament, which lies between Canterbury and Christchurch, it has been arranged that the match be played at Ohristchurch, thus enabling the visitors to return by train on Wednesday morning. On the whole, taking everything into consideration, the tournament has been fairly successful, and the manner in which the competition was arranged appears to have met with the approval of most of the clubs. SMOKE CONCERT, As mentioned above, on Monday evening the visitors were entertained at a smoke concert in Watson's Hotel, High street, by the members of the Dunedin, Caledonian, and Roslyn Clubs. Mr A, Mouat ( Dunedin) presided,' and there were nearly 100 persons present. After the health of the Royal Family had been drunk, the toast " The Bowling Association of New Zealand" was proposed by Mr R. Struthers (Christchurch) in a neat speech. The Chairman, in responding, referred with Tegret to the resignation of Mr Callender, and expressed a hope that he might yet be seen in the ranks of the association. He also referred to the friendly feeling that existed between bowlers, and said he had no doubt that if Bismarck and the Czar of Russia could only be persuaded to indulge in a friendly game of bowls they would never think of going to war with one another. — (Laughter.) He looked forward to the time when the game would extend its influence. Burns had sung — Then let us pray that come it may, And come it will for a' that, When man to man the world o'er Shall brithers be and a' that. And that prophesy, he believed, would yet be fulfilled through the agency of bowling. — Loud applause.) Mr Cablton (Roslyn) proposed the health of " The Visitors," and mentioned in his speech that it was intended to send a team of New Zealand bowlers to Australia. The visit would probably take place about the end of the year. Mr B. Hale (Canterbury Club) responded. The Chairman then presented a number of medals won in interclub matches as follows : — To Mr Hale (Canterbury Club), won from the Caledonian Club ; Mr Taylor (Milton), won from the Invercargill Club; Mr Struthers (Christchurch Club), won from the Lawrence Club. Each bowler was loudly cheered as he stepped forward to receive his medal. The Chaibman referred in very complimen- j tary terms to the energetic manner in which Messrs Capstiek (hon. secretary) and Carlton had worked in connection with the tournament. He also complimented Messrs Max Mendershausen and Marsden for the part they had taken in the musical arrangements. Reference was made during the evening to the fact that a member in one of the Christchurch rinks had to leave before the completion of the tournament. Members of nearly all the clubs still 'represented in the tournament concurred in a suggestion that a player should be allowed to come in from another rink. His Worship the Mayor, in speaking of the matter on behalf of the Caledonian Club, took occasion to refer in feeling terms to" the death of Mr Carmalt, a member of the club to which he belonged. A capital programme of musical selections was given during the evening by the Dunedin Amateur Orchestral Society (under the conduotorship of Mr D Wishart), and a double quartett fulfilling their parts in a very pleasing manner. An enjoyable evening was brought to a close about half-past 11. On Sunday Mr W. Dawson (president of the Caledonian Olub) took the Canterbury Club members out for a drive to show them the beauties of Dunedin and suburbs. The bowling match between Wanganui and Wellington clubs was won by the former by 34 points. Good progress is being made with the topdressing of the Mosgiel bowling green. Mr Begg, the caretaker of ,the Roslyn green, has been busy at the work for some time. He is of opinion that next season Mosgiel will possess a really first-class green. {Continued on page %2.) — A near-sighted young Liverpool man went out on a shooting expedition the other day. In the woods he saw what he thought was a bird perched on a tree. He fired several times afc the object, but it never stirred." Just at this juncture he discovered that he had been deluded by a piece of mud on his eyeglass.
