OUR CANTERBURY SPORTING LETTER.

(By Oub Special Sporting Cobbespoudbnt "St. Gborgb.")

CHEiSTCHOfiCH, May 10.

There is absolutely nothing doing in racing circles here, and the weather has been so bad that the work of the few horses still in training at Biccarton has been stopped, and there is nothing doing there to repay a visit.

Butler made a weeding out of his stable wheu he was at the Timaru races. Hanlan was sold to Mr M. Connolly, of Geraldine, who place* him at the service of mares in that district. The horse was a really good one, and his breaking down was one of the hardest of the many bits of hard luck which " Patsy " has undergone in the last few years. Master Agnes (who has figured as a gelding on so many cards) goes to Mr R. Rutherford, of Albury, for use as a station sire. I haye for a long time considered the son of Cassivelaunus a good deal overrated, and his late owner must have been more than a little disappointed with him. With Master Agnes 4 goes Butler's old pet Luna.

Entries for the Heathcote Birthday meeting, May 24 and 25, closed on Saturday night, and number as follow: — First day — Hurdle Race, 5; Flying Handicap, 20; Queen's Birthday Handicap, 18; Saddle Trot, 36. Second day Hurdle Race, 7 ; Welter Handicap, 22 ; Harness Trot, 15 ; Novel Trot, 10. The only Southern entry is The Brewer, who appears in the Flying, Queen's Birthday, and Welter Handicaps. Mr M. Taylor's first venture as a race meeting promoter is announced for May 16 (next Monday) at Plumpton Park. Entries closed to-night as under: — Hurdle Race, ; Selling Hurdle Race, ; Plumpton Park Autumn Handicap, ; Saddle Trot, ; Novel Handicap, ; Flying Handicap, . Captain Cotton has been appointed handicapper, Mr F. W. Delamain judge, and Mr D. O'Brien starter ; and Mr Taylor is universally wished success in his undertaking. The principal topic in sporting circles is the card-sharping case in which a recent passenger through Lyttelton, who had been well butnot altogether favourably known during a former resifew months here, took down, with the assistance dence of a of a travelling companion, a well-known resident in Port, to the tune it is said of £200. As the individual who is generally stated to be the victim stedfastly denies the soft impeachment, it is safest to name no names ; but the travelling pair assumed titles nothing below colonels, and rumour has it sometimes as high as earls. The victim, whoever he was, was enticed into the transaction by his cupidity, and has no sympathy from anybody.

COURSING.

The South Canterbury meeting at Pareora last Thursday attracted much smaller entries than were expected, but the quality of the competing dogs was good. Shamrock, Concrete, Sea Bock, and Impulse, iv the order named, were the beat of the puppies ; and Titbit was by far the best of the all-ages, though nobody will grudge Mr D. M. Ross, who has done so much for coursing in South Canterbury, his dividing the stake with the ex-Southlander, Pat.
